Oberlin Conservatory of Music, American private college music school
Oberlin Conservatory of Music is a music school located on the campus of Oberlin College in Ohio. The facility offers nine concert halls, over 150 practice rooms, and access to more than 240 Steinway pianos and 32 organs for student use.
The conservatory is part of Oberlin College, founded in 1833, and began using Steinway pianos as its standard in 1877. The college was pioneering in admitting Black students in 1835 and female students in 1837, reflecting its founding principles of inclusive education.
The name reflects its role as a specialized music school dedicated to performance and study. The institution is deeply woven into daily campus life through constant concerts, rehearsals in various spaces, and a culture where students engage in both small and large ensemble work as a natural part of their education.
The campus is about 35 minutes from Cleveland and offers student shuttles to the city for internships and events. The nine concert halls and hundreds of annual performances throughout the year make it possible to regularly experience live music.
The conservatory became the first in America to use only Steinway pianos for teaching and performances in 1877. This tradition continues today, with over 240 instruments available in practice rooms and concert halls, making it an unusually resource-rich institution.
