Bates College, Private liberal arts college in Lewiston, United States
Bates College is a private liberal arts institution in Lewiston, Maine. The campus spreads across 133 acres and brings together academic buildings in red brick Georgian style, research facilities, and student residences surrounding Lake Andrews.
The institution was founded in 1855 by opponents of slavery and admitted students regardless of skin color or religion. It became the first coeducational university in New England to teach men and women together.
The institution grew from the belief that education should be open to everyone, regardless of background or faith. This idea remains visible today in the composition of the student body and in the way teaching takes place here.
Classes are held in small groups, allowing professors to work directly with students on a regular basis. The campus can be explored on foot, with most buildings within a few minutes' walk of each other.
Every student must complete a senior thesis requiring a full year of research with a faculty advisor. This requirement has been in place for decades and sets the institution apart from many similar schools.
