Located at 287 meters above sea level, Marshalltown extends across 19.31 square miles of terrain between the Iowa River and Linn Creek.

Henry Anson established the settlement in 1851, naming it Marshall after his Michigan hometown before changing to Marshalltown in 1862 due to naming conflicts.

The population of 27,591 residents includes a substantial Hispanic community that grew during the 1990s through immigration from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

The Iowa Department of Human Services office at 206 W State Street provides essential social services including food assistance and child care support programs.

Adrian Constantine Anson, the first European child born in Marshalltown, became a National Baseball Hall of Fame player and led the local team to state championship.
