Brookfield Zoo, Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois, United States
Brookfield Zoo is a nonprofit zoo in Brookfield, Illinois, housing over 3,000 animals from more than 500 species across 235 acres (95 hectares). Each area is organized by geographic region, with indoor houses and outdoor enclosures connected by wide pathways.
The Chicago Zoological Society founded the site in 1934, as one of the first facilities in North America to use natural habitats instead of cages. Over decades, the society expanded the grounds with new buildings for marine life and rainforest species.
The name honors William Rockefeller Brookfield, and visitors today experience habitats ranging from African savannas to Pacific coastlines. Families often gather at enclosures to watch dolphins or bears, while volunteers and experts answer questions.
The site opens daily from 10 in the morning, and visitors should plan at least three hours to see the main areas. Pathways are paved and suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, and there are several covered areas for rainy weather.
The grounds hold official status as an accredited arboretum, preserving hundreds of rare tree species alongside animal enclosures. Some trees have stood since opening day and now form shaded avenues between exhibits.
