Grand Island

Grand Island is a river island nestled between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, primarily composed of residential neighborhoods surrounded by the Niagara River. The island connects to mainland New York through two major bridge complexes on its north and south sides.

The island was purchased by New York State from the Iroquois nation in the early 1800s and gradually developed as a residential area. Over the following decades, it became a home for families seeking life between two major cities.

The island is home to diverse communities whose traditions shape local gatherings and neighborhood activities throughout the year. This mix of backgrounds creates a sense of community in residential areas across the island.

Access to the island is straightforward via car through the north and south bridge connections, which makes driving the most practical way to explore. The island is primarily residential, so plan visits during daylight hours and remember that most services are spread throughout the neighborhoods rather than concentrated in one area.

In the 1820s, a journalist attempted to establish a Jewish settlement called Ararat on the island, creating an unusual moment in local history. Though the project never took root, it remains a curious reminder of the ambitious ideas that emerged here during the early decades.
