Burlington is a small city in eastern Colorado, situated about 13 miles west of the Kansas border. It sits at just over 4,000 feet elevation and features restored historic buildings that show how life looked a hundred years ago on the plains.
Burlington was established in 1888 when railroad construction through the region prompted the creation of small towns along the tracks. The city was chosen as county seat in 1889 after a vote and offered to build and donate a courthouse to encourage growth.
The town's name came from similarly named places in Kansas and Iowa that influenced early land buyers during settlement. Daily life here revolves around farming traditions, community gatherings, and a strong connection to the land that shapes how residents work and spend time together.
Burlington is easy to reach by two highways and the interstate system, making travel quick and simple. The town offers amenities like schools, shopping, entertainment, and health services, making it a convenient stop for travelers crossing Colorado.
Despite its name, Burlington was never directly served by the Burlington Northern Railroad, as plans for additional track extensions were never completed. The town instead features a wood carousel over a hundred years old, one of only a few still working carousels of this age in the country, drawing visitors especially in summer.
