COBRA DANE, Military radar installation at Eareckson Air Station, Shemya Island, United States
The Cobra Dane radar system features a 95-foot diameter antenna face that monitors activity across a 2,000-mile range into Russian territory.
Constructed in 1976, this radar facility supported verification of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II between the United States and Soviet Union.
The radar station represents the only permanent human presence on Shemya Island, where personnel maintain continuous surveillance operations throughout the year.
The L-band radar system tracks up to 120 targets simultaneously while maintaining precise data on 20 specific objects at any given moment.
The radar installation stores tracking information for 12,000 space objects and detects items as small as basketballs from hundreds of miles away.
