The bridge was conceived in the early 20th century to link New York and the Pennsylvania Railroad with New England and the Boston and Maine Railroad.

It has been featured in many movies and television shows due to its architectural design.

Today, it carries Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and New Haven Line trains.

The bridge's name is derived from the 'Hell Gate', a strait of the East River, which the bridge crosses.
