Raleigh–Durham International Airport, International airport in Wake County, North Carolina, United States
Raleigh–Durham International Airport is an international airport in Cedar Fork Township, Wake County, North Carolina, serving the Research Triangle region between Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. The facility covers around 2,023 hectares (5,000 acres) with three runways and two passenger terminals for domestic and international flights.
The airport site opened in 1943 to replace the older Raleigh Municipal Airport and create a modern connection for airlines. Eastern Airlines pushed forward the expansion of the facility and established routes between New York and Miami with stops in the region.
Terminal 2 displays permanent artworks by North Carolina artists, bringing regional creativity into the daily experience of travelers. The exhibitions rotate occasionally and offer glimpses into the work of local painters, sculptors and designers.
Both terminals sit close together and are linked by free shuttle buses that run regularly between the buildings. Arriving passengers find information desks and signage in both halls that help with orientation to gates, baggage claim and ground transport.
The grounds divide into specialized cargo areas, with the northern section used exclusively for air freight. The southern section instead handles cargo processing for commercial passenger airlines and their baggage and parcel transport.
