Corning Museum of Glass, Glass museum in Corning, New York State, United States
The Corning Museum of Glass is a building in Corning, New York State, that presents more than 50,000 glass objects representing 3,500 years of production. The spaces spread across several areas with exhibitions, workshops and demonstration zones.
Corning Glass Works founded the institution in 1951 to document the story of glass production. A severe flood in 1972 damaged many exhibits and roughly half the library holdings.
The permanent galleries show how glassmakers worked through the centuries and how communities used glass in everyday life. Visitors see objects ranging from simple household items to elaborate drinking vessels crafted across different periods.
Workshops let participants craft their own glass pieces, with sessions ranging from simple ornaments to advanced glassblowing courses. The corridors are wide enough for wheelchairs, and demonstrations take place several times each day.
The research library holds more than 500,000 documents and books on glass production, making it the largest collection of its kind worldwide. Scholars from around the world use the archives to study technical methods and artistic movements.
