Atlantic City International Airport, International airport in Pomona, US
Atlantic City International Airport is a commercial airport in Pomona, New Jersey, located roughly 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Atlantic City. The facility operates two runways, with the longer strip extending 10,000 feet (3,050 m) and designed to handle large passenger jets.
The site opened in 1942 as a naval air station during World War II, initially training pilots for combat missions. After the war ended, the Federal Aviation Administration took control in 1958 and converted the military base into a civilian airport.
The airport honors William J. Hughes, a congressman who supported the aviation industry throughout his career. The terminal building features modern architecture with large glass panels and remains separated from National Guard facilities by distinct access routes.
Most flights connect the terminal to destinations in Florida, with more options available during winter months. Travelers heading to Philadelphia can find bus links to that airport with onward flight connections.
A national research center for aviation technology sits on the airport grounds and tests new systems for flight safety and navigation. The facility also works on developing drone regulations for American airspace.
