Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns is a show cave in Luray, Virginia, featuring underground limestone chambers and passages. The system contains numerous formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and clear pools across multiple levels.

Three local hunters discovered the cave system in August 1878 while exploring underground passages in the region. The caverns opened to visitors the following year and quickly drew travelers from across the eastern seaboard.

The Great Stalacpipe Organ produces sound when hammers tap stalactites across multiple chambers, creating melodic tones from naturally formed rock. This instrument spans several underground rooms and uses the cave's own formations as resonating elements.

The underground chambers maintain a steady temperature of around 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) year-round, making visits comfortable in any season. The walking route follows paved pathways with gentle slopes and adequate lighting throughout.

Some formations here rank among the most complete in North America, with an unusually high density of active stalactites. Certain sections contain rare mineral deposits seldom seen in other well-known cave systems.
