Crestwood, village in Cook County, United States of America
Crestwood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, situated about 17 miles south of downtown Chicago. The area features quiet streets, single-family homes, and a commercial center along South Cicero Avenue where local businesses serve residents.
The village was founded in 1928 when the northern area separated from Midlothian and incorporated as Crestwood with roughly 400 residents. Growth accelerated through the 1960s and 1970s as new homes and businesses developed, while the 1990 construction of RiverCrest Centre transformed it from a rural community into a commercial hub.
The name Crestwood reflects its suburban development in the early 20th century. Residents gather regularly at weekend markets, craft fairs, and local sports events that form the social fabric of daily life.
The village is accessible by bus from Chicago, though there are no direct train stations. Most activities are centered on South Cicero Avenue, where you will find Village Hall, shops, and the weekly market.
The original Howell Airport at Cicero Avenue was a busy hub for small planes and private flights before being replaced by RiverCrest Centre in 1990. This shift shows how small towns transformed their infrastructure from aviation to retail.
