Number One Observatory Circle, Official residence in Observatory Circle, Washington, D.C., United States

The white house at Number One Observatory Circle stands on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory in northwestern Washington, D.C.

Built in 1893 for the Naval Observatory superintendent, the residence became the Chief of Naval Operations quarters in 1923 until Congress designated it for Vice Presidents.

Walter Mondale established a new governmental tradition by becoming the first Vice President to make this naval property his official family residence.

The property underwent substantial security enhancements in 2001, including structural reinforcements and the addition of protected areas following national safety requirements.

Inside the ceremonial office, the Vice President's Desk contains signatures of previous occupants hidden within its top drawer since the 1940s.
