Minnesota Correctional Facility – Oak Park Heights

Minnesota Correctional Facility is a maximum security complex in Oak Park Heights with nine separate residential buildings arranged on a hillside. Each building has its own common areas, control stations, and perimeter fencing that create clear physical separation.

The prison opened in 1982 to hold inmates who required a higher security level than other Minnesota facilities could provide. Specialized areas for medical and mental health care were added over the years.

The facility maintains The New Perspective newspaper, published by inmates since the late 1980s, offering writing and journalism opportunities within the prison walls.

People who want to visit someone must call a day in advance to arrange a time. Visitors are asked to leave items at home that could pose security concerns.

The prison incorporates medical and mental health units capable of providing specialized care for inmates across Minnesota requiring continuous medical attention.
