Whiteman Air Force Base, Air Force base in Knob Noster, United States.
Whiteman Air Force Base is an air force installation in Knob Noster, Missouri, United States. The site covers hangars, workshops, administrative buildings, residential neighborhoods for service members, and support facilities across more than 4700 acres (1900 hectares) of central Missouri terrain.
The installation opened in 1942 as Sedalia Glider Base for training pilots during World War II. Over the decades the facility transformed several times and has hosted the fleet of B-2 stealth bombers since the late 1980s.
The installation carries the name of Second Lieutenant George Whiteman, a Missouri native who fell during the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. Today the daily rhythm of the military site shapes the region around Knob Noster, where air force members and their families live and work.
Access to the grounds is restricted for security reasons and requires authorization at controlled gates. Public areas such as the nearby museum are open to visitors, while active military zones remain off limits.
The installation houses every operational B-2 stealth bomber in the United States Air Force, with none stationed elsewhere in the country. Only around 20 of these aircraft were ever built, and all gather here in Missouri.
