Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York City, Federal detention facility in Lower Manhattan, United States
The Metropolitan Correctional Center is a multi-story detention building in Lower Manhattan operated by federal authorities. The facility stands adjacent to the federal courthouse and was designed as a vertical jail structure.
The facility opened in 1975 as the first high-rise jail built by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Authorities closed the building in 2021 following safety concerns and infrastructure failures.
The prison maintains strict protocols for inmate classification, separating different security levels while housing both male and female federal detainees.
The building stands near the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse in the southern part of Manhattan. The site is not open for public visits due to its closed status.
The building was designed to hold up to 449 inmates but sometimes housed more than 700 people. The structure became known after several escape attempts and a riot.
