Montgomery Place

Montgomery Place is a riverside estate in Red Hook featuring expansive grounds with formal gardens, woodlands, and orchards along the Hudson River. The main house is built in the Federal style and surrounded by several smaller buildings that served the property's operations.

Janet Livingston Montgomery started transforming the farmland beginning in 1802 into an elegant country house. She established both vegetable gardens and ornamental plantings that were maintained and expanded across generations.

The house combines Federal architecture with French design elements and displays furniture and decorative objects from the early 19th century. The rooms tell the story of how a wealthy family lived at this location.

The grounds are open year-round from sunrise to sunset and invite walking through the gardens. House tours are offered during the warmer months and provide views of the interior spaces.

The southern woodlands contain oak trees of great age that represent one of the oldest forests in the Hudson Valley. This ancient woodland offers visitors a rare glimpse of the landscape from earlier times.
