Occoneechee Speedway, American auto racing venue
Occoneechee Speedway is a dirt oval racing track in Orange County, North Carolina, set within a wooded, rural landscape. The track retains its original unpaved surface and the old grandstands that once held thousands of spectators.
The track opened in 1948 and was one of the first official NASCAR venues when the organization was newly founded. Regular racing ended in 1968, after which the site sat largely unused for decades before being added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The track was once a gathering point for racing fans from across the region, who came to cheer on local drivers. Today, many visitors come not for active racing but to get a sense of what grassroots American motorsport looked and felt like decades ago.
The site is in a rural part of Orange County and is easiest to reach by car. It is worth checking in advance whether the grounds are open to visitors, as access is not always guaranteed.
Although the track has not hosted regular racing since 1968, the original dirt surface is still largely intact and walkable today. This makes Occoneechee Speedway one of the very few early NASCAR venues that can still be seen in something close to its original form.
