Black Mountain, Mountain town in Buncombe County, United States.
Black Mountain sits at 733 meters elevation in eastern Buncombe County, with Montreat to the north and Swannanoa to the west. The main street runs parallel to the old rail line and passes through a compact downtown of low stone and timber buildings.
The town incorporated on March 4, 1893, after a road opened in 1850 and the depot appeared in 1879. The experimental college that operated nearby closed in 1957, after two decades of teaching and artistic work.
The name comes from the dark peaks surrounding the area, which appear nearly black under certain light. Locals often walk along the main street on weekends, stopping at regional shops and cafés.
The visitor center at 201 East State Street offers maps and tips on trails and local shops. Its central position makes walking along the main street easy, so a car is often only needed for excursions farther out.
A giant red rocking chair sits outside the visitor center and serves as a popular meeting spot. The piece is large enough for several people to climb on at once for a photo.
