Hope College, Liberal arts college in Holland, United States.
Hope College is a liberal arts institution in Holland, Michigan, spread across 49 hectares next to the downtown area. Students choose from more than 90 fields of study, ranging from sciences to performing arts, with classrooms, laboratories, theaters, and sports facilities distributed across campus.
Dutch settlers opened a pioneer school in 1851 that grew into a chartered institution by 1866. The Reformed Church guided its leadership and direction for decades, though the institution later moved toward greater independence from denominational control.
The name reflects the Dutch Reformed community that founded the institution, with that heritage visible in campus buildings and the values shaping student life today. Students shape the town's character through performances and competitions that have been part of local tradition for over a century.
The campus sits within walking distance of downtown, making it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through the town center. Most buildings are open during daytime hours, and performances or exhibitions sometimes welcome guests from outside the student body.
The institution arranges more than 1,800 internships with partners in Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, and Washington. It also holds the distinction of being the only private liberal arts institution in the United States with national accreditation in art, dance, music, and theater at the same time.
