Tuxedo Park, Historic gated village in Orange County, New York.
Tuxedo Park is a gated village in Orange County, New York, spanning about 2,050 acres. The grounds include three lakes and buildings designed in Renaissance Revival style at an elevation of around 124 meters above sea level.
Pierre Lorillard IV founded the settlement in 1885 as a private hunting reserve and built cottages for friends and family members. The community developed into an exclusive retreat for wealthy New York families during the Gilded Age.
The formal evening attire known as tuxedo received its name from this location after James Brown Potter introduced it following his meeting with the Prince of Wales. Residents wore the new garment at social gatherings and made it known across America.
The village administration is located at 80 Lorillard Road and provides information on local regulations and building guidelines. The place is organized as a private community and follows specific access and design rules.
The name comes from the Lenape Munsee word tucsedo or p'tuxseepu, meaning crooked water and referring to a nearby river. This linguistic connection recalls the original inhabitants of the region before European settlement.
