Cliffs of the Neuse State Park
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, State park with 90-foot cliffs in Wayne County, North Carolina.
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is a protected area featuring steep rocky walls carved by the river through layers of sedimentary rock. The exposed stone displays bands of white, tan, yellow, and brown representing different geological deposits and ages.
The area served as a gathering place for the Tuscarora and Saponi peoples before being protected as a park in 1944. A local landowner named Lionel Weil recognized the site's natural value and worked to establish it for public preservation.
The park's grounds and educational programs reflect the importance of river systems in shaping the region's natural heritage. Local communities have long connected to this landscape through fishing and outdoor recreation.
The park has several hiking paths of varying difficulty and a lake for water activities in warmer seasons. Sturdy footwear is recommended since many trails are steep or uneven in places.
The rock walls contain visible layers of ancient seashell fragments, clay, and gravel from prehistoric times, showing that seas once covered this region. These layers tell the story of millions of years of geological change.
