Maison de La Boétie, Renaissance mansion in Sarlat-la-Canéda, France

The Maison de La Boétie is a Renaissance residence in Sarlat-la-Canéda featuring Italian-inspired elements such as intricately carved stonework and ornamental windows. Its most distinctive feature is the facade that extends over a passageway connecting to a rear courtyard.

This residence was built between 1520 and 1525 by Antoine de La Boétie and later became the birthplace of philosopher Étienne de La Boétie in 1530. Its Renaissance architecture continues to shape the historical character of Sarlat.

The ground floor hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to Étienne de La Boétie and his intellectual world. The upper floor presents an artistic installation that interprets his written works in a contemporary way.

Access is limited as the building is currently undergoing extensive restoration work and some areas may be closed to visitors. It is advisable to check ahead to see which parts can be visited.

This house nurtured a groundbreaking philosophical thinker, as Étienne de La Boétie grew up within its walls and later developed his influential ideas about free will and obedience. His intellectual stance would shape French thought for generations to come.
