Lexington Battle Green is a Revolutionary War battlefield in Lexington, United States, located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Bedford Street. The site includes grass areas and several stone memorials, among them an obelisk and statues.
On April 19, 1775, seventy-seven militia members met British troops here, resulting in the first casualties of the American Revolutionary War. A granite obelisk from 1799 marks the burial site of seven of these men.
The name Battle Green refers to the role as gathering place for the local militia in 1775. Today the area serves as a public park where visitors walk between monuments and rest on the grass.
Guided tours of the site run on weekends until November. The area is accessible at all times and suitable for a short walk among the monuments.
This site is among eight places in the United States where federal law permits the American flag to fly continuously. The authorization applies around the clock without interruption.
