Pemberton Mill, Industrial textile mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Pemberton Mill was a textile cotton mill in Lawrence that rose five stories with thick brick walls reinforced by iron columns. The building housed hundreds of looms and spindles designed to process cotton fibers on a massive scale.
The building rose in the early 1800s as part of the growing textile industry and quickly became a major employer in the region. In 1860 it collapsed due to structural defects, marking one of the worst industrial disasters in the nation.
The mill employed mostly Irish and Scottish immigrants seeking work during the industrial boom. These workers shaped the social fabric and community identity of the city.
The site is located in downtown Lawrence and is relatively easy to reach. Visitors should know that the building no longer stands, but historical markers and monuments now mark the location.
In the aftermath of the collapse, rescue efforts turned tragic when lanterns brought by rescuers ignited spilled oil in the wreckage. This secondary fire destroyed evidence and made recovery of the victims far more difficult.
