Buchanan School, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Buchanan School is a historic school building built in 1904 in Davenport, Iowa, designed in Colonial and Renaissance Revival styles. The two-story structure is made of yellow brick with varied window shapes on each floor, featuring distinctive curved doorways on its south side and sitting on a raised basement.
The building opened in 1904 as a school, initially called School Number 14, and was renamed Buchanan shortly after. It served as a school until around 1940, then became a U.S. Navy training center from 1951 to 1978 before eventually standing vacant again.
The school was a social gathering point for the western part of the city for many decades. It brought together families and shaped community life through school events and activities that took place on its grounds.
The building occupies an entire city block and is easily visible from multiple streets around it. Since it was converted to residential apartments in 2019 after renovation, visitors can view the exterior and historic details from public areas without requiring special access.
After standing vacant for years, the building was selected in 2014 for an ambitious restoration project that cost approximately nine million dollars and was completed in 2019. Now operating as The Naval Station with 18 senior apartments, the structure successfully blends its historical past with a new community purpose.
