Buffalo Rock State Park, State park on Illinois River bluff in LaSalle County, US.
Buffalo Rock State Park is a natural area along the Illinois River in LaSalle County, Illinois, set on an elevated rocky formation above the water. The park offers woodland trails, observation decks overlooking the river, picnic areas, and two shelters for outdoor use.
The land was home to the Illinois tribe until conflicts with the Iroquois in the late 1600s forced them out of the region. The park was established in 1928, making it one of the older state parks in Illinois.
Two American bison live in an enclosure within the park, giving visitors a rare chance to see animals that once roamed the Illinois plains in large herds. The presence of these animals ties the landscape to the region's deep roots in the American Midwest.
The trails are well marked and pass through wooded areas before reaching viewpoints above the river, making them manageable for most visitors. Spring through fall tends to offer the best conditions for walking and enjoying the river views.
The rock formation that gives the park its name was once a river island, separated from the surrounding land by the waters of the Illinois River. Over time, erosion and shifts in the river's course turned it into the raised promontory visitors walk across today.
