Camp Butler National Cemetery

Camp Butler National Cemetery is a military burial ground located northeast of Springfield, Illinois, featuring organized rows of white headstones across its expansive grounds. The site contains thousands of graves representing service members from different periods of American conflict.

The grounds began as a military training facility in 1861 and later became a prison camp during wartime. It gradually transformed into a permanent burial ground for fallen soldiers.
