Chestertown Armory, arsenaal in Maryland, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
The Chestertown Armory is a brick building in Chestertown, Maryland, originally built to serve military purposes. It has a large drill hall inside and features solid construction with a spacious interior that served as an important gathering place for the town.
Built in 1931, the armory served the Maryland Army National Guard for decades as a training base and operational center. After closure in 2005, the building was transferred to Washington College, and its future remains under discussion as authorities consider demolition or renovation.
The building is located near the Chester River in downtown Chestertown, making it easily accessible to visitors. Note that the structure currently has mold and other issues, so public access may be limited or unavailable at this time.
The building served as a sports venue from the 1930s through the 1950s, hosting the Washington College men's basketball team as their home court. It was renamed in 1999 to honor Sergeant John H. Newnam, a local D-Day veteran whose service is commemorated with a plaque inside the structure.
