City Hall Plaza, Central public square in Government Center, Boston, US
City Hall Plaza is a public square in Boston's Government Center featuring multi-level terraces built from red brick and concrete. The seven-acre site sits adjacent to the modernist Boston City Hall building and accommodates diverse community activities.
The plaza was built between 1963 and 1968 on the site of the former Scollay Square following designs by Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles. This transformation replaced a historic neighborhood with a modern public space.
The plaza serves as a gathering place for concerts, festivals, and community assemblies year-round. People come together here for sports celebrations and political rallies that shape the city's public life.
The plaza features wide, accessible pathways and over 3000 seating areas for visitors to rest and observe the surroundings. The infrastructure is designed to accommodate events with up to 12000 people, making it easy to navigate.
A 2022 renovation introduced 100 new trees and permeable surfaces that made the area more environmentally friendly. New play areas for children and LED lighting now make the space more welcoming for families and evening visitors.
