Connecticut General Life Insurance Company Headquarters
Connecticut General Life Insurance Company Headquarters, Office building in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
The Connecticut General Life Insurance Company Headquarters is a three-story glass structure with six interior courtyards located in Bloomfield, Connecticut. The complex extends across 30 acres of land and arranges workspaces so that none sits more than 30 feet from a window.
The building was constructed between 1954 and 1957 and represents an early example of International Style commercial architecture. It earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 for its significance in the evolution of modern office design.
The building reflects a rare collaboration between architect Gordon Bunshaft, landscape designer Isamu Noguchi, and interior designer Florence Knoll. Their combined approach created work spaces where nature and modern design meet directly in daily life.
The building features extensive glass surfaces that provide excellent natural light throughout most interior areas. The spacious layout with interior courtyards makes it relatively easy to navigate through the long structure.
The six interior courtyards were thoughtfully designed to create distinct environmental zones that break up the long, linear footprint. These courtyards serve as more than empty spaces, actively shaping how the building feels and functions throughout.
