Crystal Cave, Show cave in Spring Valley, Wisconsin
Crystal Cave is a natural cave in Pierce County that extends through multiple levels and dolomite rock formations. The underground passages reveal differently colored stone formations and small underground streams.
The cave was discovered in 1881 when two brothers stumbled upon its entrance while exploring a depression on farmland. It later gained importance as a civil defense facility during a major conflict in the 1940s.
The cave serves as a place where visitors experience how water shapes stone over millennia and learn about the creatures that live in darkness by walking through the passages themselves.
Wear comfortable shoes since the paths are uneven and the cave stays cool year-round. Besides guided tours, the site offers other activities like gem panning and mini golf in the surrounding grounds.
During World War II, the cave was the only underground shelter in the Midwest capable of protecting an entire town. This chapter from the past makes it a place with two distinct stories to tell.
