Maturín is an administrative division in Monagas state and sits near the Guarapiche River at an elevation of roughly 67 meters. The city spreads across flat terrain with wide streets and modern residential neighborhoods alongside older districts.
The name of the region comes from an indigenous chief who fell in battle during 1718. After his death, the area became known as Sitio de Maturín and gradually developed into a larger settlement.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands in the city center and serves as the main church of the diocese. Worshippers visit the building regularly for prayer and religious celebrations that shape the life of the community.
