Santa Elena de Uairén

Santa Elena de Uairén stands at an elevation of 900 meters near the Brazilian border, with temperatures ranging between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

The settlement began in 1923 when Lucas Fernández Peña established the city, naming it after his daughter Elena and the Uairén river that flows through the area.

The Pemon Amerindians maintain a strong presence in the Manak Krü community, where education takes place in both Spanish and their native Pemon language.

The city functions as a starting point for excursions to Mount Roraima and Gran Sabana, with numerous travel agencies offering guided tours and accommodation options.

Brazilian visitors frequently cross the border during weekends to purchase Venezuelan gasoline at significantly reduced prices of approximately 0.03 dollars per liter.
