Phan Thiết, Provincial capital in Binh Thuan, Vietnam
Phan Thiết is a provincial capital on the southeastern coast of Vietnam in Binh Thuan, and it spreads along an extended coastline with urban quarters and harbor districts. The built-up area runs from the river mouth to the nearby sand dunes further south.
A Cham settlement called Hamu Lithit stood here before the arrival of Vietnamese administration in the late 19th century. The town was declared capital of Binh Thuan in 1898 and developed into a regional trade center afterward.
Fishermen credit the area's name to an old Cham settlement and still use wooden boats built using inherited methods. In the coastal neighborhoods, families dry seafood on bamboo racks under the open sky.
The dry season between November and April works well for beach visits and trips to the dunes in the surrounding area. Stronger winds blow during the winter months and bring conditions for water sports.
Rows of large wooden barrels sit in the fish sauce production halls and give the neighborhood a distinct smell. Kitesurfing competitions draw participants from several countries during the windy months.
