Phu Yen, Coastal province in South Central Coast, Vietnam
Phu Yen is a coastal province in south-central Vietnam between highland areas and the South China Sea. The region stretches along a long shoreline with sandy beaches, rocky bays and many river mouths, while the interior is marked by forested hills and steep mountain slopes.
Nguyen Hoang sent General Van Phong south, who conquered the Champa region of Ayaru in 1611 and established administration. The following centuries brought further migration from the north and integration of different populations under Vietnamese rule.
The name comes from the fertile fields that have produced rice and other crops for centuries. Along the coast, travelers find fishing villages where boats gather on the beach each morning and fishermen prepare their nets for the daily catch.
For visitors, the national highway and railway line run along the coast through the area and connect several towns. Dong Tac Airport is located near the capital and offers connections to larger Vietnamese cities.
The Song Hinh dam in the southwest generates electricity and has created a large artificial lake that changed the landscape. The water reservoir sits in a valley between the mountains and also serves to irrigate rice fields further east.
