Phú Quốc, Tropical island in Kien Giang Province, Vietnam
Phú Quốc is an island in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Kiên Giang Province, Vietnam. It includes a main landmass around 50 kilometers long and smaller surrounding islets, with beaches along the west and south coasts and forested mountains inland.
The island changed hands several times between the Cambodian kingdom and Vietnamese powers during the 17th and 18th centuries. During French colonial times and later through 20th-century conflicts, it served as a prison site.
The island produces fish sauce and black pepper using methods passed down through generations. Fishermen head out to sea at night, and their lit boats form a familiar sight along the coastline.
An international airport connects the island to the mainland and other regional destinations. Motorbikes and cars can be rented locally to travel along coastal roads and inland.
Several pearl farms on the island welcome visitors and show the process from nucleus insertion through harvest. Some farms also sell jewelry directly on site.
