Co Loa Citadel, Archaeological site in Dong Anh District, Vietnam.
The fortified settlement features three concentric walls spanning 16 kilometers with moats that connect to streams and the Hoang Giang River system.
The citadel served as the capital of Au Lac Kingdom in 257 BCE under King Thuc Phan, who selected this location after defeating the last Hung ruler.
The site contains numerous Bronze Age artifacts including a 72-kilogram drum measuring 57 centimeters in height with a 73.6-centimeter diameter tympanum.
Visitors can reach the citadel by taking local buses or arranging private transportation from Hanoi, located 17 kilometers south of the archaeological complex.
The fortress walls form a spiral pattern resembling a snail shell, covering 600 hectares with ramparts reaching heights of 12 meters and bases extending 25 meters wide.
