Miséricordeklooster, 19th century monastery in Statenkwartier, Maastricht, Netherlands
The Miséricordeklooster is a 19th century monastery featuring two perpendicular wings and two separate chapels constructed in brick with mansard roofs. The buildings extend along Capucijnenstraat and overlook Miséricordeplein.
The Sisters of Mercy settled in Maastricht in 1856 and took over houses on Capucijnenstraat with assistance from Louis Hubert Rutten. The monastery buildings developed into their present form between 1898 and 1908.
The sisters dedicated themselves to supporting neglected women and girls, operating an educational program within the complex. Their work shaped the lives of many young people who found shelter and learning in this place.
The site is best explored on foot, allowing views of both wings and chapels from the exterior. The architecture is most clearly seen from Capucijnenstraat and Miséricordeplein.
A house in the garden dating from the first half of the 16th century stands at Miséricordeplein and may have once served as a plague house. This small building is among the oldest structures on the grounds and carries a long history within it.
