Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Seed vault in Svalbard, Norway
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near Longyearbyen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago.
Established by the Norwegian government in 2008, it aims to provide a safety net against accidental loss of diversity in traditional genebanks.
Often referred to as the 'Doomsday Vault', it represents a global effort to protect biodiversity and food security.
The vault operates as a backup storage facility, with seeds remaining the property of the depositing genebank.
It's the world's largest secure seed storage, opened by the Norwegian Government in February 2008.
