Stegastein, Scenic viewpoint in Aurland Municipality, Norway.
Stegastein is a viewpoint in Aurland Municipality that extends 30 meters into the mountainside. The platform, built from steel and pine, projects outward while rising about 9 meters from the slope.
The structure was designed by Norwegian architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen, opening to visitors in June 2006. Its design aimed to integrate contemporary architecture thoughtfully into the untamed mountain setting.
The viewpoint forms part of Norway's Scenic Routes initiative, bringing together modern design and natural surroundings. Visitors experience how contemporary architecture sits within the mountain landscape.
The site is accessible on foot via a pathway about 4 meters wide and features information panels on-site. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring wind-resistant clothing, as the elevation means exposure to stronger winds and cooler temperatures.
The structure gained attention in design circles for an unexpected honor: its restroom facility received recognition from Design Curial Magazine in 2015 for exemplary design. This acknowledgment reveals that even ordinary facilities here received thoughtful consideration.
