Alstahaug Church

The church features a rectangular nave measuring 20 by 12.5 meters with a narrower square chancel, constructed primarily of stone and local soapstone materials.

Construction of Alstahaug Church began in the 1100s, with completion around 1170, making it one of seven remaining medieval churches in northern Norway.

The interior contains 13th-century murals and an altarpiece created by Johan Johansen in the 1650s, representing medieval Norwegian religious artistry.

The church building accommodates 238 people and continues to function as an active parish church within the Nord-Helgeland deanery of the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland.

During renovations in the 1960s, the church received an onion dome over the roof ridge, combining traditional Norwegian architecture with distinct decorative elements.
