Hendanes Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in Kinn Municipality, Norway
Hendanes Lighthouse is an octagonal wooden tower on the western shore of Vågsøy island, positioned roughly 3 kilometers north of Vågsvåg. The structure stands 12 meters tall with a red lantern mounted 48.5 meters above sea level.
The structure entered service in 1914 to guide maritime traffic, then became fully automated in 1952 as technology advanced. Between 1963 and 1992 it also operated a radio beacon before that capability was phased out.
The keeper's residence blends into the mountainside around it, showing how lighthouse keepers once lived in remote coastal settings. This arrangement reflects the way communities adapted to harsh maritime environments.
The location sits in a remote coastal setting and requires planning to reach, best approached with local knowledge or guidance. Visitors should expect variable weather and challenging ocean conditions typical of western Norway.
A radio beacon operated from this site between 1963 and 1992, helping ships navigate across greater distances than light signals alone could reach. This technological addition demonstrates how maritime guidance evolved beyond simple visual signals.
