Måløy Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Vestland, Norway
The Måløy Bridge is a cantilever road bridge that connects the mainland village of Degnepoll to the town of Måløy on Vågsøy Island. It spans over 1200 meters across the Måløystraumen strait with large individual sections supporting the structure across the water.
Construction began in 1970 and the bridge opened in 1973, finally connecting the region after years of planning and negotiation. Its completion marked a major turning point for transport and development in the area.
The bridge fulfilled a long-held wish among locals who wanted better connections across the water. Today it serves as a daily crossing point where people from the mainland and island interact more easily.
The bridge is open to all vehicle types and offers good views of the strait and surrounding landscape. Walkers and cyclists should be aware of wind gusts, which are common in this exposed location.
The bridge was pioneering in Scandinavian engineering at the time and used construction techniques optimized for Nordic conditions. Its design allowed large spans to cross without additional supports in the middle of the strait.
