Fosnes Chapel, Church building and heritage site in Namsos Municipality, Norway
Fosnes Chapel is a wooden church building located on the northeastern coast of Jøa island at Fosnesvågen, featuring a simple rectangular design with white exterior walls and rows of windows. The interior holds approximately 45 seats and sits adjacent to a cemetery.
The original church on this site dated to the 13th century but burned down in 1896, prompting the community to build a new parish church in Dun village. This chapel was constructed in 1926 to preserve the cemetery and local worship at the original location.
The chapel holds traditional summer worship services during Olsok and functions as a branch of the Fosnes parish within the Diocese of Nidaros.
This is a small, intimate building with limited seating capacity, primarily used for funeral services at the adjacent cemetery. Access to the island location works best during warmer months when the weather allows for a comfortable visit.
This chapel was built specifically because the local community insisted on keeping a place of worship at the original cemetery site even after the main church relocated to Dun. It is a rare example of a chapel created solely to preserve an existing cemetery.
