The three-floor facility contains multiple bars, event spaces, a cinema, a nightclub, a café, an auditorium, and a concert hall for student activities.

Crown Prince Haakon inaugurated Kvarteret on February 22, 1995, following the transformation of a university building into a dedicated student cultural space.

The center hosts over 2200 annual events including concerts, debates, lectures, and performances organized by numerous student groups from Bergen's educational institutions.

Four hundred student volunteers manage operations across different roles such as bartending, sound engineering, photography, and system administration.

The name Det Akademiske Kvarter references the academic tradition of starting meetings 15 minutes after the scheduled time.
