Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Church, Catholic parish church in Pulong Buhangin, Santa Maria, Philippines.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Church is a Catholic church in the barangay of Pulong Buhangin, in the municipality of Santa Maria on the Philippine island of Luzon. Inside, several retablos display statues of saints, and the main altar features a figure of Christ, which is typical of rural parish churches in the Philippines.
The parish was founded in 1940, when several barangays were separated from a neighboring parish to form their own congregation. This gave the community of Pulong Buhangin its own religious home for the first time.
The parish honors the Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a name that refers to the biblical Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. Each year, the faithful gather for a procession and Mass in which the statue of the patroness is carried through the community.
Masses are held several times a week, including on weekends, so it is worth checking the schedule before you visit. Outside of service times, the church can usually be visited freely, but modest clothing is expected as a sign of respect.
Local tradition holds that a letter written by a woman asking for a chapel to be built survived a fire without damage. Residents regard this event as a miracle and see it as the true starting point of the parish.
