Carmo Convent, Gothic monastery ruins in Chiado, Portugal
The massive stone arches and columns of the roofless Carmo Convent stand against the Lisbon sky, displaying medieval Portuguese architecture.
Founded in 1389 by military commander Nuno Alvares Pereira, the Carmo Convent suffered extensive damage during the 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of Lisbon.
The Archaeological Museum within the Carmo ruins holds collections spanning from prehistoric artifacts to contemporary pieces, representing Portuguese archaeological heritage.
Visitors can access the convent ruins and museum daily except Sundays, with guided tours available in multiple languages through the Portuguese Archaeological Association.
The decision to maintain the church without a roof in the 19th century created an open-air monument that displays the impact of the 1755 earthquake.
