The site's origins trace back to the 6th century under Bishop Martinho de Dume, later transforming into a Benedictine monastery during the 11th century.
The building served as the principal establishment for the Loios religious congregation in Portugal after its transfer to the community in 1425.
Visitors can explore the church from Wednesday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM during summer months, with modified hours during winter.
An inscription embedded within the church walls carries the message that all things pass except good works.
